Wake Up

When did it become cool to go college to NOT learn??!! I’m not speaking of the into-the-late-night-partying/ forever-procrastinating-3rd-year-sophmore sense. While that’s not to be applauded, at least there is some degree of progress taking place. I’m speaking of getting to school ahead of when your class starts for the sole purpose of hanging out in the UC, becoming so preoccupied with goofing off that your calling card becomes, “I’m sooo late for class, guess I’ll just skip it!” Why bother to make it out of bed if you’re not even convinced of your destination. What do you mean you don’t want to go to your history class because that stuff is old and stupid, and it already happended so why are still talking about it? Isn’t college the place you enroll yourself to expand your knowledge base? Under the direction of a major, of course…because there is a lot of information available and you’ll want to focus on one or two areas in particular to avoid being overwhelmed by it all. You can only eat an elephant one piece at a time.

Instead, I’m hearing that it’s actually cool to be ignorant. “Why bother buying the textbook? If something happens to it, I can’t sell it back & now I’m stuck with a mass of paper that I don’t want.” Nevermind that this very textbook will probably improve your chances of a better-than-average grade in this class, not to mention make you a more well-rounded individual. There’s a break between classes and for the life of you, it’s makes no sense to go to the library to study for the next class, allowing you earn those much need participation points. “It’s sooo quiet in there! A nap is the most I can possibly get accomplished.” I’ve had it up to my neck with these students who want to be adults on the weekend and middle-schoolers all week during class.

WAKE UP !!! You are in school to learn. Learning that takes place through lectures AND through independent study. You’ve tied up financial aid money that could’ve very well been awarded to so one who actual wants the academic experience of college, not just the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll of TV land. This involves seeking out information that you do not already possess, climbing over the walls of your comfort zone, across the barren lands of confusion and into the lush jungles of understanding. Your journey is one that takes place alone even though you’re moving with the herd at all times. You will encounter others who seek further understanding, and you will also meet those who are quite comfortable just not knowing. It remains your decision as to whom you will travel alongside.

Even the stupid tend to know a whole lot about nothing…

winston introduction

December 19th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I was almost named Eugene, but after a swift kick in the ribs, Winston became my tagline to the world.

Needless to say I’ve arrived after a few flight delays, some lost luggage, my cab driver’s take on American Foriegn policy, and yet another underwater exploration mission as known as traveling in New Orleans during a thunderstorm. I’ ve taken quite an interest in the little things that make life special as the devil is in the details. I am a product of 29°57?53?N 90°4?14?W for better and for worse.

If you’ve yet to completely forget elementary school, then I’m all too familiar. Big round framed glasses and nice little lunch box tucked away at recess so I could finish the next book in the Hardy Boy Series. Yep, thats me. I didn’t get picked last for basketball, I just wanted to make sure all the kids that actually had skills explored their outlet.

Hi, I’m Winston. There be no I without you to wonder at what you were staring.
