Queen Helene Vitamin E Deodorant Stick

September 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

deo.jpgEvery now and again DJChuck stumbles upon a particular person, place, or thing of which he gains such a fondness that it would be dishonorable of DJChuck not to share said findings with those he holds dear. Sometimes DJChuck is just overwhelmed by feelings of amazement and joy. Now, my friends, you too shall be privy to those things which bring DJChuck such delight. Enjoy.

Somewhere along the way, deodorant and antiperspirants got all mixed up. DJChuck has now learned from Esquire, of course, that antiperspirants are not your friend. Why? The body is supposed to sweat. Sweating does all these good things that DJChuck doesn’t really care to list, but DJChuck does remember a little tidbit about how your sweat actually sends out these pheromones that attract the opposite sex. Sure, not being all dry all the time feels a bit odd, but your body would really appreciate it if you just let it do it’s thing.

Available at http://www.queenhelene.com, but DJChuck got his at Whole Foods.

His work is whimsical and childlike. Full of awkward poses and a muted color palette.

Trouble the Water

“It’s not about a hurricane. It’s about America.” That’s the tagline on the cover of what is arguably the hottest, and most telling documentary of 2008, Trouble the Water. In the wake of Hurricane Gustav, we are reminded of the devastation caused by Katrina only 3 short years ago. Already a winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary 2008 at Sundance, this documentary is a must-see for all survivors, residents, and admirers of the great city of New Orleans.

Copied and pasted from the official website, because nothing I could write would do the story justice:

“Trouble the Water opens the day before Katrina makes landfall, just blocks away from the French Quarter but far from the New Orleans that tourists know. Kimberly Rivers Roberts is turning her video camera on herself and her 9th Ward neighbors trapped in the city. “It’s going to be a day to remember,” Kim says excitedly into her new camera as the storm is brewing. It’s her first time shooting video and it’s rough, jumpy but dense with reality. Kim’s playful home-grown newscast tone grinds against the audience’s knowledge that hell is just hours away. There is no way for the audience to warn her. And for New Orleans’ poor, there is nowhere to run.

As the hurricane begins to rage and the floodwaters fill their world and the screen, Kim and her husband Scott continue to film, documenting their harrowing voyage to higher ground and dramatic rescues of friends and neighbors.”

On NPR’s Morning Edition the other day, I heard Kimberly Rivers Roberts’ story. She is an aspiring rapper, struggling to make ends meet in the Ninth Ward. Before Katrina, she sold drugs, hustled, did whatever it took to survive. Her plan was “just to film something [she] could sell,” but ended up filming history from ground zero. Since Katrina she and her husband, Scott, have only positive vibes for their future. Kimberly has a steady construction job and has started her own record label, Born Hustler Records. Her new album, also titled Trouble the Water, has dropped.
