i love videos

i-love-videos

Gearing up for this concert this weekend a few of my favorite videos from some of the artists.

NERD - Maybe
I have been a fan of NERD as long as I can remember. Good music, unique style, and some of the dopest videos I’ve seen. The highlight of this video is the fact that she wraps her hair before going to bed. Most videos omit this integral aspect of black romance.

Dashboard Confessional – Screaming Infidelities
I was a senior in high school when I heard this. And being the tragic emo kid that I am, it was on repeat consistently as I went through my first real breakup. Maybe I don’t love this video, but the song is classic to me.

Lupe Fiasco – Dumb it Down
I had the opportunity to meet Lupe with Victoria  sometime last year. And while he didn’t answer my questions fully (he was too busy ogling Victoria) he seemed like a dope character. Extremely humble and genuinely down to earth. Running in the same style of Pharrell and Kanye with his own unique spin.

Panic at the Disco - Build God, Then We’ll Talk
I was at a conference two years ago and I saw this video created by a super dope graphic design team (I can’t remember the company name, but they also invented that creepy Burger King man) and I fell in like with the pop rock of Panic at the Disco. For the guys to be so young, they have a great attention to musicality and I love the lead singer’s voice.

wish we could switch up the roles

wish-we-could-switch-up-the-roles

I had to piggyback off Joy’s post about Beyonce’s new video. It seems that the music world is dealing heavily with role reversals.

I am really digging both the song and video for “If I Were a Boy.” Conceptually its super strong, with the exception of the first 20 seconds (thats pretty wack). This is fly for a number of reasons. First we have Beyonce as a sexy police officer. Then we have some decent acting from all ends. B has come a long way from the Hip Hopera Carmen. And finally we have a non performance video that is pushing a message of gender equality.
Overall, I felt like I was watching a mini movie and think those are generally the best videos.

Now let’s compare this to Ciara’s dissent into masculinity.  Although extremely similar in theme, the execution is very different. This time we use dance to illustrate the two characters of male and female. Then we include a semi-irrelevant, Janet Jackson-esque dance break. I, however, always thought it was an odd song choice because of rumors of Ciara’s secret “package”.

Then we have Usher also looking into Trading Places. While this video reminds me of secretly watching Cinemax when I was eleven years old, with all things considered its pretty weak. We have an invisible piano, Ray Charles sunglasses, and a camera that keeps flipping upside down and right side up. Plus this girl does not seem in control… at all.

So to our transgendered artists, Beyonce wins hands down. Concept is key.
